July 31, 2026 biked 37.2 miles with over 3000 feet elevation
Good morning view!Bombed down this hill on the other side and caught a view of our campsite.Sad to leave Camp Oaza with a banging view. One of Sarah’s favorite campsite. They were so nice, the facilities were clean, they had breakfast and dinner available if you wanted and they had delicious red and white wine. This old road to the valley along Lake Skadar was only nominally paved.Rijeka Crnojevića is a cute town up the river from Lake Skadar which you can boat from. There's a stone bridge there. David is doing his ‘Where’s Waldo’ wave.Communist monument from World War II.I wear my little bonnet because sunscreen just dips from my face from my sweat. Shade is also so rare on the road it’s nice to bring my own.Washing my throat is allowed though.Lake Shkodër unfolded before us throughout the whole day. This roadside cafe said "self service" but didn't really have anything? We hike down to hopefully a waterfall swimming hole.Swimming hole was very cute. After the 10 people there left, 30 frogs remained.Behold: Frogtopia. How many frogs are there in this picture?View from the cave under the waterfall.Frog closeup. The lake has huge marshlands on this end.Virpazar was the town on the lake. We had been wondering all day where all the tourists were. They were here getting boat tours.Found water.Stray cats are here too!We got an amazing lunch. This cat wanted my smoked fish. Now we climb back up above the lake.Fortress and Prison Grmožur. The "Alcatraz" of Montenegro.Relentless climbing continues.Bored and going so slow uphill we can take shadow pictures. Gabs is hiding in the shade in this picture.GPS is hanging on!I was too tired at the top. Turns out 8% grade is the best I can reliably bike. Sarah can do better because she has a granny mode.Shkodër and Albania in the distance! The islands along this side are gorgeous. The road stays high up on the ridge but the campsite is down by the water in Donji Murići. What's adding another 200 m of climbing at this point?Welcoming party. We did not want to be kicked.Campsite right next to the beach. We ended the day with a local beer called Nikšikco.
